Second grade continues the Beutel emphasis on
Love Life, Love Learning
We believe that reading is vital to one’s success in learning. Reading, Science and Social Studies are incorporated into related themes whenever possible. In an effort to build life-long readers and to develop the habit of daily reading, Beutel second graders participate in a home reading incentive program. At the end of each semester, students who have read at least 18 hours are recognized and rewarded with a special celebration.
Math skills are reinforced through dice and domino math, fraction of the week, computer games, and star math (challenging math problems done at home with the help of family).
In Science, the life cycle is taught in a hands-on butterfly unit where the students actually see the changes from the caterpillar to the butterfly. Learning about the scientific process is fun when done in conjunction with the district bubbles unit.
Developing organizational skills is important to future academic endeavors as well as in adult life. Teaching children to be organized is encouraged by the use of a Monday Homework Folder and a Thursday Go-Folder (with completed work). These also serve to keep parents informed of their child’s progress.
The second grade year is a year of learning, fun, and growth.
