A course
designed to meet the career and/or personal needs for word processing while
providing the skills necessary to utilize the computer. Emphasis is
placed on the mastery of touch control of keyboard characters, on correct
key stroking, and on proper care of the equipment. Skill development
is through a continuous program of selective practice based on diagnosis of
individual needs through the production of letters, manuscripts,
tabulations, business forms and communications, reports and themes, and
composition at the keyboard. Additional skill development includes
proofreading, spelling, punctuation, and correction techniques.
This class is a required prerequisite for all Tech Aps
courses, unless the student tests out by demonstrating proficiency. |
Accounting

This course offers a general introduction to accounting,
emphasizing the fundamental accounting equation and its application to
accounting procedures. These include the basic steps of the accounting
cycle, special journals and ledgers, work sheets, adjusting and closing
entries, special problems in the purchase and sale of merchandise, notes and
interest, depreciation, accruals and prepaid items, payroll records, and
personal income taxes. |
Intro. to Business

A course
designed to develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts of the
world of work as well as the management of one's own personal affairs.
The study of the world of work includes an overview of economic systems,
types of businesses, forms of ownership, technology of the business setting,
and one's role and impact in a business. A component is included for
individual career planning and personal financial planning, including
budgeting and consumer issues. |
Advanced Accounting

An in-depth course which incorporates the complete
accounting cycle in relation to partnerships, their formations and
dissolution, characteristics and legal aspects of corporate organization and
ownership, including investments and distribution of earnings. Study
includes adjustments of bad debts, depreciation and depletion of fixed
assets, prepaid and accrued expenses, adjusted and accrued income, as well
as various methods of inventory control, preparation on business budgets,
and the use of notes receivable and notes payable. Through simulation,
experience is provided in initiating and keeping an accounting system and in
analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing managerial problems using
accounting information as a tool. |
Web Mastering

Web Mastering is designed to teach students how to use the
World Wide Web (WWW) as a source for information in the form of graphics,
text audio, and animation files. It will teach the legal and ethical
aspects of web use. The student will become familiar with the vocabulary,
hardware and software necessary to access the WWW, learn to use a variety of
data input devices, and learn about networks and their relationship to the
WWW. Students will learn how to acquire and transfer information obtained
from the WWW, as well as how to create a web page to communicate
information, or a process or product. Students will use HTML, FrontPage, Dreamweaver and Flash to create web pages. Graphics and animations will be
created using Adobe Photoshop/Elements, Flash or Fireworks. Ultimately,
students will create their own web site, and learn how to upload it to the
Web. This course will meet the one year Technology Application
graduation requirement. |
Business Law

A course to develop a foundation in the legal, economical,
financial, technological, international, social, and ethical aspects of
business. Students incorporate this knowledge to make appropriate business
decisions. Students will learn the rights and responsibilities of both
consumers and businesses. Students will learn the different forms of
organization of a business, as well as personal financial management.
Students will learn the ethical concepts of integrity in the business
environment, as well as employee rights and protections provided by law. |
Record Keeping

This course is designed to develop skills used in everyday
business activities at home and at work. Included in the content are
budgeting and financial planning. cashier's records, handling of money, and
tasks common to simple office procedures. Activities include keeping
records involving employees, receipts and payments, and financial records
for small retail businesses. Also provided is the application of
bookkeeping principles and procedures in simulated activities. |
Multimedia

Prerequisite: Keyboarding or equivalent |
Students will study multimedia and technology foundations,
including related terms, concepts and designs such as: text, image
morphing, audio, video, animation and graphics manipulation. Students will
learn to make informed decisions about multimedia applications. They will
utilize problem solving both individually and in groups, conduct research,
synthesize knowledge, and evaluate results. This course will satisfy the
Technology Applications credit for graduation. |
Video Technology

Application course |
Students will learn the history of video technology, how to
use a video camera to collect video footage, and different video editing
techniques. Students who take the class will be required to collect video
footage of school activities throughout the year and edit their footage for
presentation on the campus news channel. This course will satisfy the
Technology Applications credit for graduation. |
Independent Study in Technology

This
course is for juniors and seniors whose level of achievement in technology
applications courses allows them to pursue work individually, extending
their technology experiences. Students will identify a technology
related question, issue or topic which they will thoroughly investigate.
Students will produce a quality in-depth technology project relating to
their identified topic. The topic may relate to an academic or
non-curricular subject matter with advisor approval. Many students
pursue advanced web design (designing for the school web site), hardware

Publishing 1 credit

Prerequisite: Keyboarding or equivalent |
Students will study
desktop publishing foundations, utilize problem solving, conduct research,
synthesize knowledge, and create products for publication both in print and
in electronic formats. Students will become experienced with software
including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher and Adobe PageMaker.
This course will satisfy the
Technology Applications credit for graduation. |

This
course will focus on the science of designing computer programs using an
object oriented style. Students will develop skills using the Java
programming language. Programming exercises will use input, output,
mathematical operations, conditional and repetition constructs, methods,
functions, classes, string manipulation, applets and applications.
This course will cover problem solving, computer architecture and
programming concepts. This course will satisfy the
Technology Applications credit for graduation. |
