Course
Description
Creative Writing 1 & 2 are
semester-length courses that count as ½ of an elective credit each. They
emphasize the basic skills needed to write in a variety of genres. Test and
quiz grades are given over material from the textbook, On Writing Well by
William Zinsser, and participation grades are taken daily.

A third course, Creative Writing III, is also available. This course requires that each
student turn in at least four 12-page compositions during each semester. The
students are allotted more creative freedom and are able to write under their
own restrictions with more flexible due dates.
The majority of class time in all three
courses is spent working on individual compositions, and group critique sessions
are held to help students get feedback and improve their works before handing
them in.
Creative Writing 1 focuses on learning the
basic skills needed in order to become a serious writer. Units of study
include memoir, profile, short story, and a focus on select chapters from the
textbook. Creative Writing 2 covers five units of study: travel article,
scripting, back to basics, moral dilemma, and an individual project in the
students' choice of genre. Creative Writing 3 allows the students to choose
genres of their choice.
