Contest Information
There are five academic contests the Brazoswood Math and Science Team
participates in. They are:
- Mathematics
- Number Sense
- Calculator
- Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
- Computer Science

Description |
| Mathematics |
The Mathematics contest is a 40
minute multiple choice test on mathematics. Topics are drawn from basic
arithmetic all the way up to calculus. Particular emphasis is placed on
trigonometry, a topic not thoroughly covered in most high school math
courses. It is recommended that participants at least enjoy math; it is
NOT necessary that all participants have taken through calculus.
The scoring for this test is +6 points for correct
answers, -2 for incorrect answers, and 0 for questions skipped. A graphing
calculator is highly recommended for this test. |
| Number Sense |
The Number Sense contest is a 10
minute test on mental mathematics. All questions must be answered WITHOUT
any work shown on paper. Answer blanks are provided for answers: there can
be no erasing or mark-outs. Only answers may be written down. There are 80
questions ranging from simple addition to simple derivatives.
The scoring for this test is +6 points for correct
answers, -4 for incorrect answers, and -4 for questions skipped. No
calculator of any type may be used. |
| Calculator |
The Calculator contest is a 30
minute test on rapid calculator computation. All questions test your
ability to use a calculator extremely quickly. Most questions involve
extensive numerical inputting, and an HP RPN calculator is needed. Please
see Mr. Krebsbach for more information. Upper level math knowledge (like
Calculus) is not required. Students need only be dedicated and willing to
practice.
The scoring for this test is +6 points for correct
answers, -4 for incorrect answers, and -4 for questions skipped. A
calculator, preferably HP RPN, is required. |
| Science |
The Science contest is a 2 hour
test involving the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Questions
draw on knowledge from each topic equally. Pre-AP level knowledge in these
areas is necessary; AP level knowledge is preferable. However, everyone is
encouraged to start early (9th graders welcome) since practice makes a
difference.
The scoring for this test is +6 points for correct
answers, -2 for incorrect answers, and 0 for questions skipped. A
scientific calculator is encouraged; a graphing calculator may NOT be
used. |
| Computer Science |
The Computer Science contest is a
45 minute test involving the Java Programming Language. Students interested
in this contest should see Mr. Krebsbach about a Java book and be prepared
to self-teach this programming language. Typing skills and computer
literacy are required, along with a desire to learn material not taught at
BISD.
The scoring for this test varies, depending on the
test. Sometimes questions are multiple choice; sometimes they are free
response programming questions. Please visit the official UIL site on
computer science
here. |
For more information about the club, or to become a member, see Mr. Krebsbach in
room 137D on the Main Campus before or after school. Anyone is welcome to join,
just talk to Mr. Krebsbach and find out when the meets are.
