PALS
Information
What is PALS?
|
PALS stands for Peer Assistance Leadership and Service. We
at Brazoswood add the 'S' because we feel that leaders
serve. PALS began in Austin, Texas over 25 years ago with
the hope of making schools more safe, less violent, and
promoting healthy behavior. It is an award winning,
non-profit organization.
The PAL®
peer helping program combats problems such as violence in
schools, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, gang participation and
school dropouts by providing a critical line of defense both
at school and in the home through building peer helping
programs all across the United States of America.
|
What do PALS
do?
|
Classroom Helpers & Tutors- PALS are assigned a class to go
to twice a week. In this class they will help to motivate
the unmotivated students, become a role model, and help
around the class room.
Protecting Me, Protecting You- A team of PALS will teach a
substance abuse program which was created by the Mothers
Against Drunk Driving. This is taught to grades 1-5.
Special Programs- PALS will teach certain special programs
throughout the year. The topics can range from bullying,
tobacco, alcohol, and other issues of concern.
Peer Mediation- There
is a team of trained PALS which can help to solve problems.
They go through a step-by-step process which assists the
students in conflict to find a solution. This helps students
get out of major discipline issues by attempt this process.
|
What does it
take to be a PAL?
|
PALS are a select group
of kids. In order to become a PAL, a student needs to
demonstrate good behavior, responsibility, respect, good
grades, and being substance free. |
|
How do I become
a PAL?
|
In the spring, there
will be an announcement to pick up packets from Mrs.
Hendrick. You will need to pick these up, fill them out, and
turn them in. There is an interview process and you will be
selected by the teacher and a student committee. So, make
sure your reputation is good!
|
What are PAL
Responsibilities?
|
PALS are responsible for
supplying their own ride to their school. Also, PALS agree
to a honor code which must be followed. They are expected to
maintain good behavior in and outside of school. The honor
code states they will not abuse substances, for they are
supposed to be helping fight them.
