Questions
By Rachel Meiller

Does the loss of one thing lead to another,
Or does this only keep us from going under?
The lies we tell ourselves to get the advantage
Only prevent the foretelling of the truthful message.
Can we gain more by being internally honest,
Or does this façade protect and comfort us?
Day after day, promises are made to make up for one’s damage.
Falling each time only prompts the search to find true
courage.
What does it take to act upon these resolutions?
How does one find these life changing solutions?
The answer is one that cannot be written, told or read
The true test is to stay strong and not be mislead
And what about those few who live to make a difference?
Is this quality something that can be emulated, or does it act
as reassurance?
With each step forward, there seems to be one back.
The path ahead proves to be more like a defensive attack.
Is freewill supposed to provide the way?
Is self-reliance the answer to a beautiful day?
These questions do not cover up life’s inevitable facts.
We can only sit back, and watch how one reacts.

Farther from Far
By Brynn Castro

Things are different…we are farther
away from far.
The world is ugly; it is a slap on the face.
Our plans we hope will follow through, but pessimists have
plans too.
We will escape from small town politics and our closest
friends.
Live in studio apartments and live life like the breeze blows
by.
Hang pictures on the walls perpetuating where we came from,
but make a vow to never go back.
Study art and sunken ships that the foundation of this country
was based on.
The drive there will be long but it gives us time to decide if
we were cut out for being cut out.
The world doesn’t matter anymore; it’s just your smarts and my
creativity.
Depending on ourselves will be nothing new to us.
The origin of our dreams coming true was inspired by the ones
we kept close.
And the one rule in our lives will be to stay away from what
almost tore us apart…anger.
We will stay simple and thankful yet embellish our lives with
beautiful things.
For every step taken backward, we will take two forward.
And, so you know why I’m still here; it’s because of that
phone call that saved my life.
The one call I answered just in time.
What are best friends for?
They are for the grass blades between my toes and hating the
perfect people in the magazines.
It’s for the last drink of water sacrificed by another…for me.
When we reach the highest building like in one of our favorite
movies, we will look down and dream of falling, falling, and
falling.
Then wake up from a sudden jump in our sleep.
I will declare my freedom in front of a group of conservatives
and feel perfect doing it.
But still we are farther from far…

Dance,
Dance
By Dara Dalton

Dance through life
Dance through time
Dance around the feelings
You don’t want to be mine
You’re dancing through a world
You don’t want to see
And you’re beating to a rhythm
That doesn’t lift you free
This head bang
That you are performing
You need to slow down your pace
Recollect your mind
Stop all the things
You never wanted to find
Make peace with your song
Go ahead and dance away your life
Find your true inside
And make peace with your strife
So dance around those feelings
Dance around the world
Dance straight to your heart
And to the place you want to make yours.

What? Not Again!
By
Matt Lee

A heart full of love
is a wonderful thing.
It makes t’morrow a day worth living;
Those many years of toil are redeemed;
‘Least such is the way to me it seems.
My love is not fickle nor foolish nor fleeting.
Can’t you hear my heart, bippity-beating?
My love is earnest and honest and true.
To you, Jill, I swear this really: I love you.
What’s this I hear: you want none of that?
You say I am drunk, ‘ready finished the vat!
You say I’m wicked as the devil and even more cruel!
You say that you’re going, that you’ve been such a fool!
Wait, my Jill! For God and the angels above,
Didn’t you just hear my profession of love?
--You devil’s child! You heartless villain!
I’m not Jill; I’m Jane!

Life
By
Leanne Kintz

On your first turn you must decide,
Does a mediocre job keep you on the safe side?
Police, painter, poet, pop-star;
Which career stands for who you are?
At the next demanding stop sign, you confirm your marriage,
And choose how many babies for the carriage.
Zoes, Chloes, Kaspars, Pipers;
Playing and feeding and changing their diapers.
Your tires screech to a sudden rest,
Down the road, you face a test.
Mansion, log cabin, country house, shack;
Did college pay its dues or did you slack?
Is it a game of “Life” or is life just a game?
Destiny’s role makes them much the same.

Only
By Marissa Brower

Only-
Autumn. When trees start their sleep-
Wandering, the small,
Harmless leaves
Fall back and forth
And red and orange appear
Hidden for months and
Coming out. Only
Autumn.
When the trees are catching some z’s.
The lovely,
Lifeless leaves fall
Back and forth
And yellow and brown come waltzing
From green-full and living.
Only
Autumn
When
The
Beautiful
Leaves fall
Back
And
Forth.
