Eight-Step Instructional
Process
The Eight-Step Instructional Process technique has
been used to improve academic performance in schools throughout the
district and is now being shared with educators from across the
nation.
The eight steps are:
Disaggregate data.
Develop timeline of skills, topics to be taught.
Deliver instructional focus.
Administer assessment.
Enrichment.
Tutorial.
Provide ongoing maintenance.
Monitoring.
Since this teaching standard was implemented, the
number of out-of-state visitors wanting to step inside classrooms
got so high and disruptive to everyday operations district officials
had to limit the number of visitors.
The method, coupled with other teaching practices, helped close the
performance gap between white students and minorities.
Educators develop a timeline based on the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills curriculum and TAAS data before delivering the
instructional focus, or objective, which is announced and taught at
the start of the class. Student's knowledge on the subjects are then
assessed to determine whether students need enrichment activities or
tutorials.
Brazosport ISD has been featured in several national publications,
including Mike Schmoker's "The Results Fieldbook: Practical
Strategies from Dramatically Improved Schools" and "High Student
Achievement: How Six School Districts Changed into High-Performance
Systems: by Gordon Cawelti and Nancy Protheroe.
The district let video cameras onto campuses about a year and a half
ago. The finished product is a 30-minute video called "Teaching to
Standards: The Eight-Step Instructional Cycle."
