I’m proud to be the counselor here at Madge Griffith. I have been in education for 15 years. I have been a 5th grade science teacher, a high-school counselor, and an elementary counselor. I have lived in Lake Jackson for 4 years. My husband is a youth director, so I also work with junior high and high school kids at church. I love interacting with kids of all ages. I receive great joy in being a person that steps in to a child’s life to help them grow and learn.
My job as the counselor at Madge Griffith is a challenging one that has a big variety in the things I do. I work with four main groups of people: students, teachers and staff, parents, and administrators. I also work with other counselors and teachers around the school district. I work with students individually by themselves, in groups of 3 to 5, or whole classrooms. I work with parents and teachers usually through conferences to make school a good place for students to learn and grow. My roles can be grouped into the following four categories.
Respond to immediate concerns on campus. I help students, parents, and teachers with topics such as: problems they need help with, handling a crisis, improving grades, conflict management, making friends, social skills, anger management, emotional and behavioral concerns, coping skills, misbehaviors, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, safety, grief and loss, family issues, and finding local resources for assistance.
Provide guidance to all students. I help students, parents, and teachers with awareness and understanding of topics such as: self-awareness, motivation, decision-making skills, goal setting, communication skills, study skills, social skills, responsible behavior, drug education, anti-bullying behavior, and being a good citizen.
Assist students in understanding their own development. I help students learn about themselves and make good choices by talking about topics such as: problem solving, goal setting, study skills, organizational skills, understanding feelings, decision making, course selection, interpretation of test scores, natural changes, career exploration.
Assist total school program. I work with many things that help the campus run smoothly such as: coordinate TAKS testing, support and assist Special Services, coordinate school wide positive behavior reinforcement (Proud Eagle), parent education and support, teacher consultation and support, staff development, stay up with current issues and research, coordinate campus volunteer program, coordinate the campus SEARCH program, help with community relations, bring in special speakers and programs, supervision of students, and other duties as assigned.
A school counselor’s job includes a variety of roles and responsibilities. It is a full and rewarding job. If I could ever be of assistance, please contact me at the school.
