What do I have to do to substitute teach in BISD?
You must:

  1. Take the substitute class offered here in our district.
  2. Make a reservation with Human Resources to attend the class here in the district (979-730-7000, Ext. 11410).
  3. Fill out a paraprofessional application.
  4. When you attend the class, bring your application, a valid driver’s license, a social security card, your high school diploma and/or college transcript. If you have a GED, bring your certificate plus proof of 12 college credit hours to go along with your GED.

How much does it cost for the Substitute Academy?
The class offered at BISD is free of charge. If you take the class at Brazosport College there is a $82 fee. However, if you have taken the class at Brazosport College and present us with your substitute certificate, your pay is increased $5 per day. You will need to contact Brazosport College at 230-3600 for more information on their substitute class.

Can I substitute every day?
We have an automated system called AESOP. It automatically calls substitutes. However, over 80% of our positions are filled by substitutes going online or accessing AESOP over the phone and searching for jobs. The frequency of your work greatly depends on how proactive you choose to be in seeking substitute positions.
