"Where Failure Is Not An Option"

Junior Honor Society

The LJIS NJHS sponsor is Ms. Laura Campbell.

LJIS participates in the National Junior Honor Society. In the seventh grade, members must maintain at least a 92 average the whole school year, and perform at least 12 hours of community service. In eighth grade, those who meet the requirements become members of the National Honor Society. For more information on NHS, visit the NHS website through Brazoswood High School.

Here’s some important information for you to know about the National Junior Honor Society.  This information is taken from the National Junior Honor Society Handbook, and will help you understand the requirements for membership in the NJHS.

Membership:
Membership in a local chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon a student.  Selection for membership is by a faculty council and is based on outstanding SCHOLARSHIP, CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, SERVICE, AND CITIZENSHIP.  Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities. This means that you must maintain a cumulative grade point average at 92 or above throughout the academic year.  Your conduct grades must be a "S" or above.  You are required to perform a minimum of 2 community service hours each grading period. You must also continue to exhibit the qualities of excellence which made you eligible for membership in the National Junior Honor Society.

Activities:
There are several required activities that all NJHS students must participate in and there will be plenty of optional activities as well.

Required Activities:

bulletEach local chapter of NJHS must select and carry out one or more service projects for each year.
bulletAll NJHS students shall regularly participate in these projects.
bulletService projects shall have the following characteristics:
  1. Fulfill a need within the school or community
  2. Have the support of the administration and the faculty
  3. Be appropriate and educationally defensible
  4. Be well planned, organized, and executed.
bulletAll NJHS students shall actively participate in fundraisers to help pay for the service projects, induction ceremonies, and other activities.

This means we will do projects which will be helpful to ourselves and others.  Such projects include running the chains at football games. NJHS students assist teachers to prepare their rooms before the beginning of the school year. We help by directing students and parents at the 7th grade Orientation and again at Open House.  The NJHS is responsible for the school recycling.  NJHS students collect toys for the hospital and the police department’s "Blue Santa" program.  We donate food and other needed items to the Rainbow Room and many more opportunities always present themselves.
