November 7, 2000 "Extra Mile Award"Board members recognized the following individuals as recipients of the "Extra Mile Award":
The "Extra Mile Award" is presented in recognition of those employees, students, volunteers, and community members who are helping to take the District "Beyond Exemplary". District and Campus Improvement PlansCharlene Burgner, Director of Instruction, presented Board members with an overview of the 2000-2001 District and Campus Improvement Plans. Mrs. Burgner explained that the plans are prepared with the assistance of district and campus planning software that ensures the alignment of local, state, and national goals. The District Improvement Plan focuses on student performance, curriculum and staff development, school business practices, parental and community involvement, and technology. The campus plans focus on goals and objectives relevant to each campus and its teachers and staff. Mrs. Burgner emphasized that K-12 learning is a shared responsibility by displaying the Freeport, Lake Jackson, and Clute/Richwood campus "feeder patterns." Chapter 41 Partner AgreementThe Board approved an agreement with the San Angelo Independent School District to purchase attendance credits from San Angelo as a means of equalizing the District's property wealth per student for the 2000-2001 school year. Brazosport will benefit from the agreement by receiving a "efficiency credit" from the State. San Angelo will benefit by receiving an increased overall level of funding. Proposed Purchase of Brazos Green Shopping CenterBoard members proposed to contract for the purchase of 31,511 square feet of floor space and approximately four acres of property located in the Brazos Green Shopping Center in Clute. Since 1992, the District has been leasing space in the Center; most recently serving as the District's Alternative Placement Center campus. Approval to Award Bid ContractsThe Board of Trustees approved awarding contracts for roof renovations at Brazoswood High School, audio visual equipment, instrument storage lockers, and library books. Approval to Sell Delinquent Tax PropertyBased on a recommendation by the Brazoria County Property Tax Resale Committee, the Board approved the sale of delinquent tax property held in trust by Brazoria County. Technology Maintenance and Support ContractThe Board of Trustees approved extending the existing contract for technology maintenance and support management services with Kent DataComm for an additional one-year period. Policy UpdateBoard members reviewed the Texas Association of School Boards Policy Service Division's Localized Policy Manual Update 64. Mr. Okruhlik explained that Update 64 consists entirely of legal (LEGAL) policy changes and, therefore, does not require Board approval for adoption. Memorandum of Understanding with SimbiontMr. Okruhlik reviewed with Board members a first draft of a Memorandum of Understanding between Simbiont and BISD to co-develop and commercialize software products. Mr. Okruhlik stated that a Board visit to Simbiont is also being planned. Master Facility PlanMr. Okruhlik informed Board members of his plans to invite individuals willing to assist the District in developing a master facility plan to meet with him and a committee of staff and Board members to begin the process of developing a master facility plan for the District, including a demographic study. Freeport Intermediate School Demolition PlanMr. Okruhlik notified Board members that he and staff will begin developing a plan of demolition for the former Freeport Intermediate School facilities, and, stated that he will bring the plan to the Board for their review at a later meeting. |
