May 8, 2001 “Extra Mile Awards”The Board of Trustees recognized the following individuals and organizations as recipients of “Extra Mile Awards” for May:
Student Recognitions
The Board recognized students
for academic and athletic achievements during the past school year. Here
is a complete listing of students and awards (in Adobe Acrobat Reader). Distance Learning DemonstrationKarla Christman,
Video/Distance Learning Specialist, presented Board members with a
“real-time” voice and video demonstration of distance learning classes in
progress at Brazosport and Brazoswood High Schools and Brazosport College.
Mrs. Christman explained that the collaboration between the District and
Brazosport Community College touched over 100 students last school year, and
could facilitate “team teaching” and other expansions of the program next
year. Board members congratulated Mrs. Christman and participating staff
members for the success of the program. Advanced Placement Exams
Becky Rinehart,
Coordinator of Assessment, presented a report on Advanced Placement (AP)
examinations. Mrs. Rinehart reported that both the number of exams taken
and administered at Brazosport and Brazoswood High Schools have increased
significantly during the past two years, with students currently being offered
15 different tests. In addition to greater participation, students are
also performing very well on the AP exams, with over 70% of 1999 and 2000 test
takers passing with a grade of “3” (out of five) or better. TAAS Exit Results
Mrs. Rinehart also presented
Board members with preliminary exit-level TAAS results for 2000-2001, and
announced that early results indicate that both Brazosport and Brazoswood High
Schools will receive a Texas Education Agency rating of “Exemplary” for the
2000-2001 school year! In addition to the percents of all students and all
student groups passing TAAS, Mrs. Rinehart also presented the percents of each
group scoring greater than a TLI of “84.” Board members applauded the
District for its continued success and its focus on “Exemplary and Beyond.” Dual/Concurrent Program
Char Burgner, Director of
Instruction, presented a 2001 update on the District’s Dual-Concurrent Program
with Brazosport Community College. Mrs. Burgner reported that the Program
offered over 30 courses and enrolled over 850 high school students during the
fall and spring semesters last year. Of the over 1,000 Dual-Concurrent
courses taken, participating students enjoyed a success rate of over 90%.
Mrs. Burgner concluded by stating that the program provides an ideal remedy for
“Senioritis.” Policy Update
The Board adopted the Texas
Association of School Boards Policy Service Division’s Localized Policy Manual
Update 65. The TASB policy update encompasses State Board of Education Rules and
other recent changes in law affecting the District, as well as refinements and
modifications of several local polices recommended for adoption by the Texas
Association of School Boards. Approval of Non Resident Transfer
Students
The Board approved non-resident
transfer requests for students living outside the Brazosport Independent School
District attendance boundaries for the 2001-2002 school year. Oath of Office
The Oath of Office was administered to newly-elected Board members, Mazie Mack and Joe Allen. Appointment of Trustees For Medical
Benefits Plan
The Board appointed the

2001-2002 Student Code of Conduct
The Board voted to postpone
approval of proposed revisions to the Student Code of Conduct to a future
meeting. The revisions, which are scheduled to become effective for the
2001-2002 school year, are the result of input from BISD staff members and
business and community leaders. Resolution Of AppreciationBoard members
enthusiastically approved a Resolution of Appreciation in honor of retiring
Board member, Arch (Beaver) Aplin, III. Upon reading the Resolution
to Mr. Aplin and the audience, Board President, Ron Miles, complimented Mr.
Aplin on being, “a very unique individual, with good business sense, who
always had the kids at heart.” Mr. Okruhlik and Board members joined Mr.
Miles in congratulating Mr. Aplin for his many years of distinguished service on
the Board of Trustees. Election of School Board Officers

Other ActionsIn other actions, the Board
approved the financial statements for March 2001, official minutes for the April
2001 Board meeting, a 2000-2001 Special Revenue Fund budget amendment, a
contract with Vernor Material & Equipment Co. for the demolition of the
former Freeport Intermediate School, and a recommendation by the Brazoria County
Properties Tax Resale Committee to sell delinquent tax properties held in trust
by Brazoria County. |
