Student Recognitions
A complete listing of all BISD students recognized at the April
Board meeting is attached
to this issue of the Highlights.
Boys and Girls Club
Presentation
Fay Beard, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club, thanked
Board members for the District’s continued support of the Club and
presented the Board with a plaque containing a piece of artwork by
one of the students being served by the Club’s programs. Ms. Beard
reported that the Boys and Girls Club has over 500 children
participating in after-school programs and assured the Board that
the District’s support is making an important difference in the
lives of young people in the community.
BISD Education Foundation
Donation
Greta Luce, Representing the Brazosport Independent School District
Education Foundation Gala Committee, presented the Board of Trustees
with a check, in the amount of $32,500, in support of the District’s
Project Teach scholarship program. In presenting the check, Mrs.
Luce thanked the Board and the Brazosport community for their
support. Board President, Jay Luce, accepted the check on behalf of
the District and thanked the Education Foundation Board members in
attendance and the Gala Committee for their hard work and dedication
that made the contribution possible. The Project Teach program is a
cooperative effort between the District, Brazosport College, and Sam
Houston and S. F. Austin State Universities; targeting teachers in
the hard-to-fill areas of bilingual education, special education,
and math and science. The program offers up to a $15,000 scholarship
to successful students who graduate from Brazosport or Brazoswood
High School in the top half of their graduating class and who are
willing to obtain a teacher certification and commit to teach in the
Brazosport Independent School District for at least four years after
graduation.
Lighthouse Learning Center
Tim Vern, Principal of the Lighthouse Learning Center Alternative
Placement Center (the Center), assisted by Assistant Principal,
Danny Massey, and English/Speech Teacher, Ginni Leathers, presented
the Board of Trustees with a report on the Lighthouse Learning
Center’s new orientation process and “Level System.” Mr. Massey
stated that the Center now only receives students on Tuesdays and
Thursdays and that all students assigned to the Center and their
parents are required to attend two days of orientation training to
familiarize themselves with the Center’s procedures, rules, and
expectations. Mr. Massey also described the recently implemented
Level System that measures students based on dress code compliance,
class preparation, time on-task, and respectfulness. Mr. Massey
reported that the following levels are assigned to students based on
their compliance with the above measures:
Yellow - Beginning level
Red - Most restrictive level
Green - Less restrictive level
Gold - Least restrictive level.
Mr. Massey concluded by reporting
that the new Level System has been very effective in improving
student behavior and performance. Ginni Leathers described the
Center’s “Keys Essential to Your Success” (K.E.Y.S.) class, which
promotes and encourages students to develop social skills, self
concept, self control, “ways of being smart,” goal setting, and
empathy. Ms. Leathers stated that the program encourages students to
view themselves and their campus differently, and encourages staff
members to view their role in the students’ lives differently. Ms.
Leathers concluded her portion of the presentation by inviting Board
members to visit the Center. Board members thanked the presenters
for their report and for the overall success of the District’s
disciplinary alternative education program.
Cancellation of School
Board Trustee Election
The Board approved an Order Declaring Election of Unopposed
Candidate for Jay Bart Luce and Mario Martinez; unopposed candidates
for election as Trustees for Districts 6 and 7, respectively. Under
Texas election law, a school district may cancel a trustee election
for a single-member district if a candidate whose name is to appear
on the ballot is unopposed.
Teacher Appreciation
Day/Week
Board members approved a resolution recognizing the week of May 1
through May 7, 2005, as National Teacher Appreciation Week, and May
3, 2005, as National Teacher Day. Superintendent Okruhlik explained
that the annual event is sponsored by the National PTA and is
intended to focus attention on the outstanding work of our public
school teachers. The resolution declares that, “teachers should be
accorded high public esteem, reflecting the value the community
places on public education,” and recognizes teachers for their,
“dedication and commitment to educating their students.” Board
members joined Mr. Okruhlik in thanking teachers for their tireless
service to the students of the Brazosport Independent School
District.
Demolition of Old Lake Jackson Intermediate School
The Board approved a demolition plan for the Lake Jackson
Intermediate School facilities scheduled to be vacated in connection
with the upcoming move into the new campus. The plan, which was
developed in cooperation with the District’s architects, PBK
Architects, Inc., calls for the demolition of all existing campus
facilities, with the exception of the existing (old) gymnasium, the
library and multi-media center, administrative office areas, and the
“110” and “120” classroom wings. Board members approved the
recommended demolition plan and asked the Superintendent to develop
estimated maintenance and upkeep costs associated with the remaining
facilities. Demolition of the vacated facilities is scheduled for
summer 2005.
Other Actions
In other actions, the Board approved the official minutes of the
March 1, 2005, Board meeting, approved the financial statements for
February 2005, awarded bid contracts for training room supplies and
custodial management services, and authorized a change order to
accommodate scope modifications in connection with the Jane Long
Elementary School additions and renovations project.
