Student Recognitions
A complete listing of all students recognized at the May 1, 2007, Board meeting is attached to this issue of the Highlights.

Extra Mile Award
The Board of Trustees presented an Extra Mile Award to Dr. Rakesh Jain.  In assisting the Board with the presentation, Director of Public Information/Communications, Stuart Dornburg, stated that Dr. Jain has provided professional assistance, advice, and training to the District’s counseling staff for the past 13 years.  Dr. Jain has also made himself available for consultation during crisis situations and has provided screenings and workshops for families.

Health & Wellness Program
Sheree Speir, Science/Health Curriculum Facilitator, presented Board members with a report on the District’s Coordinated School Health Program.  Mrs. Speir informed Board members that each school district in the state must develop such a program for submission to the Texas Education Agency.  Mrs. Speir stated that the plan was developed specifically for the District and thanked Director of Athletics, Jessie Crow, Director of Child Nutrition Services, Christy Koury, Health Services Coordinator, Becky Gore-LaRoche, and Safe & Drug-Free Schools Specialist, Glenn Campbell, for their assistance with developing the plan.  A copy of the District’s Coordinated School Wellness Program, including criteria, program materials, evidence, and supporting activities is available on the District’s web-site at:

Teacher Appreciation Week
Board members approved a resolution recognizing the week of May 6 through May 12, 2007, as National Teacher Appreciation Week.  The annual event is sponsored by the National PTA and is intended to focus attention on the outstanding work of our public school teachers.  The resolution declares that, “teachers should be accorded high public esteem, reflecting the value the community places on public education,” and recognizes teachers for their, “dedication and commitment to educating their students.”

Lease Agreement With Boys & Girls Club
The Board approved an agreement with the Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County to lease the old Freeport Intermediate School gymnasium south of the Boys & Girls Club’s current location. The gymnasium will provide the Club space for physical recreation, after-school classrooms, and other activities.  The lease agreement is for an initial period of 10 years, with automatic annual renewals thereafter.  Boys and Girls Club will pay a nominal yearly rental for the facility, with additional consideration provided in the form of improvements made to the property during the term of the lease.

Brazoswood Softball Field
Board members considered and approved a facility modification request from the Athletic Department (the Brazoswood High School softball program) to replace the existing grass infield at Brazoswood High School with a “dirt” infield.  Director of Athletics, Jessie Crow, stated that the existing grass infield does offer some advantages (particularly in the form of excellent drainage), but that the Brazoswood coaching staff believes a dirt infield would represent an overall benefit to the players and to the program.  The following advantages of a dirt infield were identified:

bullet

A dirt infield allows the team to practice and play on the same surface they encounter for away and playoff games.

bullet

Dirt infields are not subject to dew forming during evening games.

bullet

Grass infields are difficult to keep leveled.

bullet

A dirt infield offers the District the possibility of hosting playoff games.

Mr. Crow stated that the existing drainage and irrigation systems would be retained as part of the infield conversion project.  Board members questioned Mr. Crow at length regarding the merits of the recommendation before voting to approve the facility modification request.

Other Actions
In other actions, the Board approved the official minutes of the April 3, 2007, Board meeting; approved the financial statements for March 2007; awarded contracts for band & orchestra equipment and for groceries, paper goods, and fresh produce for the Child Nutrition Program; approved a recommendation from the Brazoria County Property Tax Resale Committee to sell delinquent tax property held in trust by Brazoria County; adopted a Special Revenue Fund budget amendment for 2006-2007; approved non-resident student transfer requests for the 2007-2008 school year; and approved personnel actions discussed in Executive Session.
