Trustee Election
The Board of
Trustees ordered an election to be held on
Saturday, May 10, 2008, for the purpose of
electing trustees to fill the expiring
three-year terms of the following Board
members:
Applications
for a place on the ballot must be received
by 5:00 p.m., Monday, March 10. Early
voting by personal appearance will be
conducted at the Brazosport College on
weekdays and Saturday, beginning Monday,
April 28, and continuing through Tuesday,
May 6.
Approval Of A
Web-Based Applicant Management System
The Board approved funding for the purchase
of a web-based applicant management system
provided by NETCHEMIA. Ron Speir, the
Executive Director of Human Resources,
pointed out that the new web-based applicant
management system was necessary to assist
the District in streamlining the process
from application to job placement. In
addition to more efficiently processing
applicants, the new system will provide
tools necessary to recruit and hire the best
possible candidates for BISD in an effective
and efficient manner.
Approval Of
Texas Safe Schools Project
The Board of Trustees approved an
inter-local agreement with Region 4 for the
Safe Schools Project. Ron Speir, the
Executive Director of Human Resources,
explained that the Safe Schools Project
provides school districts with a
comprehensive solution for reducing the risk
and potential liability of employing persons
with criminal records through an internet
based employment screening program
encompassing a number of services. It is
provided by Safe Advantage Services, who has
partnered with Region 4 to provide
approximately 250 Texas school districts
quality, criminal history checks for
prospective and current employees, along
with volunteers.
Joint
Election Agreement/Contract With Brazoria
County
The Board of Trustees approved an agreement
with Brazoria County to hold a county-wide
joint election in May 2008. In presenting
the recommendation, Executive Director of
Business Services, Daniel Schaefer,
explained that House Bill 1, passed by the
Texas Legislature during the summer of 2006,
contains legislation requiring school
districts to hold joint elections or face
moving their elections to November. Mr.
Schaefer explained that the District, along
with other political subdivisions in the
County, has been contacted by the Brazoria
County Elections Division regarding a
county-wide joint election with common
polling places. The County will utilize its
Hart InterCivic electronic voting system to
facilitate the joint election. The District
is expected to benefit from the agreement by
sharing election costs with political
subdivisions. Voters should benefit from
more convenient and consistent voting
locations.
Interlocal
Agreement With Brazoria County
The Board of Trustees approved an interlocal
agreement with Brazoria County to grade,
along with adding and evenly distributing
material to an approximately 150 foot long
section of an entrance road used by the
District as a bus turnaround area. The
entrance is owned by Mobile Home Park 1 and
2 located at 227 County Road 486 in Jones
Creek. The agreement provides that the
District will furnish all materials for the
project and that the County will supply the
necessary equipment and operators.
Other Actions
In other actions, the Board approved the
official minutes of the January 8, 2008,
Board meeting; approved the monthly
financial statements for December 2007;
approved a revised 2008-2009 District
calendar; awarded contracts for athletic
supplies & equipment (cross country and
volleyball) and for a warehouse walk-in
freezer/cooler project; named additional
teacher appraisers for the 2007-2008 school
year (Jeanne Harding and Jodie Moore);
approved emergency authorization for the
purchase of fire suppression system updates
and semi-annual inspections; and approved
personnel related items.
