Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, with the assistance of Dow Chemical Company Foundation and their generous donation of $150,000, BISD will offer two new pathways though Project Lead the Way in both Engineering and Cybersecurity.
Project Lead the Way is a nationally recognized program that provides students a cohesive instructional path through their personal classroom experiences, educators, current research and ongoing collaboration with experts in academia and industry. This powerful combination delivers a comprehensive learning experience unlike any other that provides students with leading-edge knowledge and expertise, as well as transportable skills they can apply no matter how their career landscape evolves. The initial introductory courses will provide the foundation of two Project Lead the Way pathways in Engineering and Computer Science. Each pathways consists of a total of four courses. The Computer Science pathway starts with Computer Science Essentials, while the Engineering pathway launches with Introduction to Engineering Design.
BISD Superintendent, Danny Massey says, “We are very grateful for Dow’s generous donation and investing in our local schools. An investment in our students, is an investment in the future. The future of Dow and BISD is very bright.”
Career and Technical Education Director, Jessie Jennings, states, “We are so blessed at Brazosport ISD to be a part of such an amazing community with supportive business and industry members such as Dow. This generous opportunity will provide our students with enhanced student learning that will better equip them with the knowledge and resources needed to be successful upon life after graduation.”
Through this Dow grant and the resources provided through Project Lead the Way, BISD will create state of the art engineering and cybersecurity labs and classrooms so BISD students will grow and excel in the enhanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics endorsement. The district will create a new computer lab within both Brazoswood and Brazosport High School campuses to accommodate the Project Lead the Way software, curriculum, equipment and additional resources. This will also provide two new course pathways within our ever evolving Career and Technical Education pathways. Teachers will also be provided with an intensive two week summer training to better equip and prepare them for the upcoming school year to ensure success of the programs.
“Dow has a strong national partnership with Project Lead the Way and we are excited to bring this project-based learning curriculum to our BISD high schools,” said Dow Public Affairs Manager, Gabriella Cone. “Enhancements to educational offerings like Project Lead the Way are a game changer and one that will really move the needle when it comes to preparing our students for their next level of learning.”
Research has shown that Project Lead the Way contributes to a strong and positive impact on mathematics and science achievement while having an affirmative influence on students’ career interest and likelihood to continue their education. With pathways to prepare and motivate students to enter careers in science and engineering, we recognize that the opportunities for students at Brazosport ISD is limitless and we are excited to see how Project Lead the Way encourages and empowers students to make a difference in their classrooms along with their communities.
