Music

Tricia Lamp, Music Instructor

Curriculum:

Students at Ogg learn music theory, sight-singing and ear training, facts and details about various composers, and proper vocal technique. Different singing and writing styles, form, and music from other countries (in the original languages) are also studied.

Dance and movement is incorporated at each grade level. Dances from other countries, as well as movements for specific songs are taught.

After the Christmas holiday, time is concentrated on Orff and other percussion instruments. All kiddos get a chance to experiment with rhythmic patterns and sounds. Many of these exercises offer great opportunities to teach great math lessons!

Programs:

Several special programs a year are given by the different grade levels, and include all students on that grade level; as long as their behavior and attitude are aligned with the school's procedures. These shows are usually in line with the Christmas/Winter holidays, Black History Month, and "Spring Fling" events.

Music Memory:

Students also have a chance (3-5th) to compete in the U.I.L. Music Memory Contest that is held in the district each spring. This category requires a minimum of 3 contestants and an alternate to identify 16 different pieces of music as well as the composer. They compete against other students their own age.

Choir:

Ogg also boasts a choir, made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who are interested enough to audition for a place. The 'Singing Twisters' perform several times a year, both at school, and out in the community. They are always a part of "Christmas in the Park" (in Clute), and they usually perform at one or more of the nursing homes in the area.
