Accelerated Reader at
Gladys Polk
Accelerated Reader is a very
important program at Polk. Students are encouraged to read as much as
possible each year. Students are given the Star test to find out their
independent reading level. Then they are given a reading range that will
help them increase their reading level. You may download these test
lists to your computer. It will be particularly helpful during the
summer since the county library has many of these books.
To download, click on the list you want. The title list is a list of the
books in alphabetical order. The reading level list has the books in
order from the lowest level to the highest level. This is probably the
most useful list because you can look for only books that are on your
child's reading level, ( their ZPD, or independent reading range). If
you are looking for a book by a particular author, then you will need
the list by author. If you do not have Acrobat Reader loaded on your
computer, you will need to download that first in order to access the
list. In some cases, the list will be downloaded to your desktop and
must be opened from there.
The Accelerated Reading Program is a commercially produced computerized
reading management program.
-
Students are given the computerized STAR reading
assessment and the results provide students and teachers with a
reading level to aid in book selection.
-
Students make their own book selection using their
reading level from the Accelerated Reader list.
-
Students read the book at their own pace.
-
Students take a computerized test to check their
comprehension on the book that they read. Each book has a point value
based on level of difficulty and length.
Each 9 week period, students have a point goal based on their reading
level and an amount of time spent reading each day. |
