Texas Grant FAQs
| The purpose of the TEXAS Grant and TEXAS
Grant II Programs are to provide a grant of money to enable
well-prepared eligible students to attend public and private
nonprofit institutions of higher education, public community
colleges, or technical colleges in Texas.
Who can compete for a
Texas Grant? A student who:
• Is a Texas resident that graduated from a public or accredited
private high school in Texas;
• Completed the recommended plan or distinguished achievement
program;
• Has financial need;
• Has applied for any available financial aid or assistance;
• Enrolls at least 3/4 time in an undergraduate degree or
certificate program; and
• Has not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a
controlled substance
Who can compete for a Texas Grant II?
A student who:
A student who:
• Is a Texas resident;
• Has financial need;
• If applying for his/her first award, has a family contribution of
no more than $2,000;
• Has applied for any available financial aid or assistance;
• Enrolls at least ½ time in the first 30 hours (or their
equivalent) in an associate’s degree or certificate program at a
public two-year institution of higher education; and
• Has not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a
controlled substance
When should students apply?
Deadlines vary by institution, but fall and spring grants are
generally awarded in the spring prior to enrollment.
How do students apply?
Awards will be made through the financial aid office of the college.
Persons interested in the program should contact the financial aid
office of the college or university of their choice to find out
about deadlines and procedures.
How much can a student receive through the
program?
The award amount depends on the number of hours taken by the student
and the type of institution the student attends. In general, it is
an amount equal to the student's tuition and required fees.
(Approximately $1,325 per semester for university students; $484 per
semester for community college students; and $770 per semester for
technical college students, based on enrollment of 12 hours per
semester)
