History of Taylor-Mullins Transportation
NAT TAYLOR - Nat went to work for
the Freeport Independent. School District in 1940, where he worked for 34 years as a
mechanic and school bus driver. Nat and his wife, Geneva, had eight children. Delores Key,
was their third born child and became a school bus monitor and driver in October of 1972.
She went to work for B.I.S.D. one month after her husband, Bobby Key. Bobby was employed
by the district as a mechanic in September of 1972 and followed the path of his
father-in-law when he became shop foreman in 1974.
Nat's wife, Geneva, was also employed by B.I.S.D. She worked in the Food Service Dept.
as a pastry cook at Brazosport High School and retired in the early 70's. After retiring
from Food Service, she was also employed by the Transportation Dept. as a school bus
monitor.
Nat and his family have given a great deal of dedication and commitment to Brazosport
Independent School District and are greatly appreciated and loved by their many friends
and coworkers here at B.I.S.D. Transportation Dept.
JOE MULLINS - Joe came to the
Brazosport area in 1934 as a commercial fisherman. His career in the Transportation
Department emerged from transporting his own children to and from school. The Mullins
family lived in Surfside near the Coast Guard Station. At this time, there were no bus
services and Joe began transporting his own children to and from school. Before long, the
neighborhood children were riding with Joe on his daily route.
As more families moved into the area, Joe was asked to transport additional children to
school. Joe's passengers began to outgrow his family vehicle, forcing him to build the
first school bus for Freeport Independent School District. On January 4, 1935, he was
employed by the Freeport Independent School District as a school bus driver.
After the consolidation of the area's school districts, he drove school buses and was a
maintenance man and bus mechanic for Brazosport Independent School District. Mullins has
45 years of service with B.I.S.D.
