About Read 2020

BISD Implements Read 2020 Literacy Initiative

Brazosport ISD’s approach to literacy is more than just a program or initiative, it is a movement set out to help ensure that each and every third grader is reading on grade level or higher by the year 2020.

The district’s movement named Read 2020, was set in motion this school year with a target date of 2020, when every third grade student will end the school year with the ability to read.

There are many components to Read 2020 that involve not only teachers, but parents, district personnel, and community members at large. “We have a very supportive community that values education,” says Superintendent Danny Massey. “A key component of our literacy effort includes engaging our teaching community, families, community members, and businesses to get involved. It’s going to take the whole village to create these readers as leaders!”

“With the knowledge that reading and writing are the heart of learning in all other subject areas, the district is placing a laser focus on early-literacy development starting in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten,” said Clara Sale-Davis, Chief Academics Officer. “Professional development for literacy development is ongoing as well as providing our teachers with research-based materials for quality instruction.”

The district recently purchased Leveled Learning Intervention resources for all elementary schools to provide intense interventions for struggling readers. Direct teacher instruction with quality materials (in both English and Spanish) will provide opportunities for children to not only “get caught up” with their peers, but will turn struggling readers into successful readers with engaging leveled books and fast-paced systematically designed lessons.

As parents, we should never underestimate the power of reading. Making reading a part of family life can help children develop a learning pace that will build over time. By reading 20 minutes every night starting in kindergarten, a student will have read for the equivalent of 60 school days, and will most likely score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Additionally, reading helps our children develop a better vocabulary, which will be an integral part of college entrance exams!

Read 2020 aims to be an initiative for our community partners to embrace and support. We hope to stir the enthusiasm of our community partners to cultivate a love of reading through building knowledge, shaping attitudes and influencing parents, early childhood professionals, community members, and child care providers. Like ice cream trucks that play music traveling down the street, our plans are to create a Literacy Bus for children to gain access to books! Our high school Career and Technical students are ready to embrace this project with the help of the BISD Education Foundation. We hope to gain this kind of momentum by providing Read 2020 baskets of books in waiting rooms at doctors’ offices and other areas around town.

Many exciting events are scheduled to occur in three of our communities such as Literacy Nights. These are free events for parents and students to attend to learn literacy activities to use at home. We are so grateful to the Freeport, Clute, and Lake Jackson municipalities for providing spaces for these literacy events.

The Read 2020 action plan includes nine action steps:

  • Promote the importance of reading 20 minutes a day
  • Provide training and resources to all BISD staff to ensure high quality reading acceleration, intervention and enrichment
  • Ensure every elementary classroom has implemented balanced literacy (reading, writing and speaking) with fidelity
  • Solicit and support continued community participation
  • Provide access to reading materials in the community
  • Implement family and community initiatives to promote reading throughout the Brazosport area
  • Provide resources to parents/guardians that will foster early reading readiness
  • Implement district-wide, campus-based reading initiatives
  • Celebrate student attainment of literacy skills

Brazosport ISD believes in the ability of ALL learners, the instructional capacity of our amazing staff, and the unwavering support of our families and community! We are excited to lead this movement and look forward to developing young readers as future leaders.
