Dress for School
From BISD's Insight Newsletter August 2004

While it is impractical to list every possibility of acceptable dress and grooming, the following highlights of the BISD dress code may assist you in decisions when purchasing clothing for the upcoming year.  Final decisions concerning what is acceptable are left up to the campus administration.  Please feel free to contact the campus principal with any of your dress code questions.

Dress Code Highlights

Clothing should be neat and appropriate.  The following items are prohibited:
bulletHalters
bulletTank tops
bulletStrapless tops
bulletSpaghetti strap tops
bulletClothing that exposes the midriff (any part of the stomach)
bulletSleepwear or house slippers
bulletClothing containing offensive slogans or symbols; suggestive or controversial designs
bulletExtremely baggy clothing
bulletEarrings on male students
bulletVisible tattoos
Boys' hair should be cut to prevent it from extending below the eyebrows in front, below the bottom of the ear on the side, and not to extend below the bottom of a conventional shirt collar in the back.  No beards or mustaches are allowed, and sideburns should be trimmed no lower than the bottom of the ear.

Clothing for all students should be of sufficient length and fullness to cover undergarments when the student is sitting, stooping, and bending.  "Sufficient length" for shorts, dresses, and skirts means approximately 2-1/2" from the top of the knee or longer. Elementary students should be dressed appropriately to take part in daily physical education activities.

Your Child's Health
From BISD's Insight Newsletter August 2003

Child Nutritional Services
Brazosport ISD serves healthy, nutritious meals at each district campus.  Meals are designed to be appealing to students while providing nourishment for growing bodies.  Meal prices are $1.50 for Elementary/Middle School Lunch and $1.75 for Secondary Lunch.  Breakfast for all campuses is $1.00.  Menus will be distributed on Meet the Teacher Day or the first day of school.
For your convenience, Brazosport ISD uses a computerized meal account system to make daily lunch money a thing of the past.  Students may deposit money into their account for purchase of meals and extra items.  In addition, parents have the option of blocking purchases of drink or snack items and may request a copy or their student's account transactions.  Please contact the Cafeteria Manager at your child's campus for details.
Brazosport ISD Child Nutrition Services participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program.  Through these programs, free and reduced meals are available to students whose families meet certain income criteria.  Meal applications are available at every school and the Child Nutrition Office.  Students who were approved for free or reduced price meals for the 2002-2003 school year may continue to receive benefits until Friday, September 12, 2003 at which time a new application must be approved for meal benefits to continue.  (
For more information, see Child Nutrition Services)
Immunization
Students enrolling in the Brazosport Independent School District must comply with Texas State Law.  Evidence of compliance with the immunization requirements must be validated by a doctor who is registered and licensed or by a public health clinic.
Previously enrolled students should have received notification regarding updating of immunizations.  For further information, parents should contact their physician, the health department, or their school nurse.  Immunization deadline for the current school year is the first day of school (August 14, 2003).
(See Health Services for more information)
Medication at School
All prescription or non-prescription medication (including aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) must be furnished by the parent and kept in the nurse's office.  Written instructions signed by a parent and/or doctor must accompany all labeled medicines sent to school.  The nurse or nurse assistant will observe students taking medicine.  Medications are not to be carried or possessed on campus by any student.

Foreign Exchange Students
From BISD's Insight Newsletter May 2003

The world became a smaller place this school year with six foreign exchange students in BISD. They are all girls, all juniors at Brazoswood High School, and all headed back to their homelands in early summer. They’ve missed their friends and family from home, but have enjoyed making new friends here. Among the things they say they’ll miss about our little corner of the world are new friends, their host parents, free refills on soft drinks, lockers (they had never had them before), and warm weather.

Christiana Haegele (who says she’ll miss Dr. Pepper and the Buccaneer Belles; not necessarily in that order) hails from Munderhingen, Germany and has been the guest of David and Rhonda Hearne. She hopes to attend at least one year of college in the USA. Paula Menke is from Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany, and wants to major in journalism; she lives in the home of James and Linda Alexander. Margarete Misch, from Erfurt, Germany, lives with Melissa and Rickey Dahl and plans to become a teacher of music and English. Louise Rohde, from Bad Suederode, Germany, plans to study art in college. Her host parents are Wes and Susan James. Ines Scheidegg comes from Muelheim, Germany, plans to study economics in college, and wants to manage hotels one day. Her host parents are Jim and Becky Noone. Berivan Sengul, the only non-German in the group, is from Istanbul, Turkey and will return there to study mechanical engineering. She lives in the home of Eric and Lucilla Henderson.

Christiana, Paula, Margarete, Louise and Ines all have two more years of high school to complete in Germany, and Berivan will go straight to the university in Istanbul when she gets home. They all have very positive things to say about their experiences here, and all intend to return to the United States to visit sometime. The community of BISD has been fortunate to have these fine young ladies with us this year, and we wish them safe journeys home and successful futures.
