HISTORY

O. M. Roberts Elementary School was built
in 1960 and dedicated on March 5, 1961. 
The architect was Charles Lawrence of
Caudill, Rowlett, and Scott.
The contractor was C. J. Leftwich of
Leftwich, Stein, and Harris.
The first Principal of O. M. Roberts was
Mrs. Evelyn Williams. 

 

OUR NAMESAKE

Oran Milo Roberts was born in South Carolina
on July 19, 1815.  He studied law at the University
of Alabama, served in the Alabama Legislature,
and moved to San Augustine, Texas, in 1841.
He was elected governor in 1878 and re-elected
in 1880.  He was instrumental in establishing the
University of Texas, Sam Houston State Teachers
College and Prairie View A & M College.  During
his tenure as governor, he also aided in the
re-organization of the A & M College of Texas.
     When he left the governor's office, he taught law
at the University of Texas for 10 years.  He died
in Austin on May 19, 1898 at the age of 83 and
is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
