About  us

On the front lawn of our 45 year old campus, sits a historical marker of Old Velasco, the site of the first fight for Texas Independence. It is altogether fitting and proper that our school is named in honor of that battle, because just as brave Texas pioneers fought for freedom, brave faculty, staff, and students daily enter our classrooms to fight obstacles of language barriers and low socio-economic status as they seek to attain a quality education to face the challenges of tomorrow.

Velasco is the largest of three elementary schools in Freeport, Texas on the south side of the Brazosport Independent School District. The area is steeped in history, most importantly being the birth place of Texas. At nearby Surfside, Stephen F. Austin brought the Old Three Hundred in on his ship, The Lively, to first settle Texas.

Just down the street from our campus is thriving Port Freeport where more than 600 ships from around the world import and export goods each year. Dole and Chiquita are prominent businesses there. Dow Chemical provides most of the scenery as one scans the horizon around our school.

It is in this setting that Velasco Elementary School has achieved excellence. Velasco was awarded the Four Star Award from Texas Monthly Magazine. Currently our school is rated Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency. Visitors from around the state, nation, and world come to Velasco on a regular basis to observe Velasco’s strategies for improving TAKS scores, techniques for decreasing the gap so all children can learn, and total quality education.
