On January 8th, over sixty of our Brazosport ISD students were acknowledged at our first Brazosport ISD Scholar Banquet. Brazosport ISD Superintendent along with members of our Board of Trustees were present to congratulate Brazosport ISD students for their achievements during the evening. Former Brazoswood graduate, Chris Miller, M.D., served as our special guest speaker and provided three pieces of advice to that was shared with him in college and that he wanted to pass on to them:

  1. Find a mentor or role model that is real.
  2. Belly up to the table.
  3. Never let them see you sweat. (Don’t sweat the small stuff, but just in case, be sure to buy some good deodorant.)

Dr. Miller, a 2002 graduate of Brazoswood High School, has his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A&M. He completed both medical school and his Residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Texas, Houston. Dr. Miller is licensed in the state of Texas and is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is currently a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Texas Medical Association, Dallas County Medical Society and Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Miller currently serves as Chair of the Quality Committee at Texas General Hospital and Chief of Anesthesia at Texas General Hospital.

After Dr. Miller’s words of advice, students were acknowledged for certain academic achievements.  To begin with, students were invited who successfully earned 18 or more college credit hours prior to the start of this school year. Second, current students who were identified as an AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor,  with Distinction or as a National AP Scholar received an invitation as well. All AP Scholar titles are designated by the College Board:

  • AP Scholar is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
  • AP Scholar with Honor is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
  • AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
  • National AP Scholar is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Finally, students who received a letter of commendation or were identified as a semi-finalist or finalist for the National Merit Scholar program were also invited. These students received some of the top scores in the nation on their PSAT test as juniors. Additionally, immediate past graduates were designated as an AP Scholar with Distinction or as a National AP Scholar were also invited to attend. These BISD Scholars have chosen to take rigorous college-level curriculum and have committed the time, energy, and effort to achieve high levels of success. This evening was a moment to pause and congratulate each one on their outstanding academic achievements.
