The new state-of-the-art facility will include safety and security features such as electronic door locks, entrance vestibule, security fencing, cameras, and more; and has been designed to meet students’ varying learning styles for years to come. It is scheduled to open in August 2020 and will serve over 750 students in grades pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.

“The new Bess Brannen Elementary School is being built two years ahead of schedule and under budget. This is a great day for Bess Brannen Elementary, the city of Lake Jackson, and BISD!” said Mr. Danny Massey, Superintendent of Brazosport ISD.

The new building will be designed to promote outdoor engagement with a centrally located media center and connected green space. A large multipurpose room functions as a cafeteria on one side, a gym on the opposite side with a dividing wall in the center to further serve as a meeting space for large events. The design within each classroom will allow for natural light as well as for areas dedicated to collaborative learning in classroom wings. Each wing will include 13 classrooms, a teacher planning area, and restrooms. Two elevators and a centrally located stairway will provide access to the second floor of the school. The new Brannen will be designed with traffic flow taken into account and will have long stacking lanes to get cars off the streets.

Brannen Elementary officially opened its doors on October 7, 1968, as a kindergarten through fifth grade campus. Through the years, Bess Brannen Elementary School has grown in attendance and size. The present school has met the needs of thousands of children, and is now a Prekindergarten through 4th grade campus with over 570 students and 65 staff members. Brannen is rated as one of the top elementary schools in the state of Texas, earning five Texas Education Agency Distinctions, all that are possible for an elementary school, for the past two years.

For the last 50 years, Bess Brannen has had hundreds of dedicated teachers and staff. But the school has had only three principals: Nancy Williams, Johnnie McWilliams and for the last 19 years, Principal Julie Evans.

Brazosport ISD plans to open the last two of five new elementary campuses, Roberts and Brannen, as part of the 2014 BISD Bond Program. Both new campuses are ahead of schedule and are set to open August 2020.
