According to Terri Cardwell, Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Lake Jackson, this recycling program provided by Keep America Beautiful has been in place for several years at Rasco Middle School, Lake Jackson Intermediate and Brazoswood High School, however the resources and funding had not been available to expand to the elementary campuses within the city.

Cardwell is a Certified Community Environmental Professional (CCEP) who has worked with the district on recycling projects for the past 22 years. She shared that the materials provided as part of the program are in alignment with state mandates and classroom activities on this environmental subject. Some educational materials were given to students to take home to share with their parents, and teachers were provided training materials to utilize in their classrooms. They also provided informational posters to each classroom and for the campuses.

As part of the program, a grade level of students will be completing an online survey prior to the start of the recycling project to gain insight on what they currently know regarding recycling. After the program has been in place for several weeks another survey will be completed for comparison of the program’s effectiveness.

Despite the rain, volunteers from Keep Lake Jackson Beautiful and Dow Transport delivered enough recycling bins to each campus to ensure that every classroom, work area, cafeteria and front office has easy access for all students and staff to recycle their plastic, paper, aluminum and steel cans.

“Thank you to Dow Texas Operations, Keep America Beautiful, the members of Keep Lake Jackson Beautiful and City of Lake Jackson for your work on this beneficial and ongoing program that invests in our future,” said Brazosport ISD Superintendent Danny Massey.
