Kyla Casey, eighth grader at Lake Jackson Intermediate, competed in the Texas Junior High School Rodeo Association (TJHRA) State Finals held in Gonzales, Texas May 27-June 1 bringing home big wins. Kyla placed 3rd in the first go round of Barrel Racing and earned the 6th place title in both Barrel Racing and Pole Bending in the Finals Average.

Texas Jr High and High School Rodeo is split into 10 different regions. While Brazoria County falls under Region 7, students can choose in which region they compete and to advance to the State Finals, students had to place in the top 10 in their region. Kyla qualified Reserve Champion in both Barrel Racing and Pole Bending from our region. Region 7 is known to be one of the toughest regions in the state of Texas.

“Just making it to State is great but to actually be in the top six from the State of Texas is a huge achievement. We ran and practiced all year long and our hard work paid off. I’m very proud of my accomplishments and my horses Pearl and Moe,” said Kyla.

Although this is not Kyla’s first year to rodeo it was her first year to run TJHRA. She was also named as the Region 7 Girls All-Around Rookie Champion. The Rookie All-Around Champion is awarded to the first year competitor that was the most successful in two or more events.

Kyla will move up and compete in the Texas High School Rodeo Association (THRA) Region 7 next year that begins in August.

Way to represent LJIS and BISD!  Congratulations!
