Students from across the district in grades 2-8 competed in 18 different UIL A+ Academic events at the BISD University Interscholastic League A+ Academics District Meet held on February 1, 2020, at Clute Intermediate School. These events span the curriculum and are designed to complement and expand upon what students learn in the classroom through specific subject knowledge and through acquired skills that are valuable in many disciplines.
Brazosport ISD had more than 430 students competing in the district meet from fourteen campuses: SF Austin STEM, Bess Brannen, A.P. Beutel, Madge Griffith Elementary, Elisabet Ney Elementary, T.W. Ogg Elementary, Gladys Polk Elementary, O.M. Roberts Elementary, Velasco Elementary, Lanier Middle School, Rasco Middle School, Clute Intermediate School, Freeport Intermediate School and Lake Jackson Intermediate School.
Medals were awarded for 1st-3rd place and ribbons for 4th-6th place in each event, for each grade level. BISD students competed in the following events: Art, Calculator Applications, Chess Puzzles, Creative Writing, Dictionary Skills, Impromptu Speaking, Listening, Maps, Charts & Graphs, Mathematics, Modern Oratory, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Science, Social Studies, Spelling and Storytelling.
The A+ Academics District Meet is the culminating event for A+ competition. Elementary and middle school/junior high students do not advance to another level of UIL competition after district. This event is great preparation for high school when our students are eligible to participate in the University Interscholastic League, which offers the most comprehensive program of academic competition in the nation. UIL Academics offers more activities than any other UIL division with 29 contests at the high school level. More than half a million students in grades 2-12 participate in UIL academic contests each year.
These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, are designed to motivate and challenge students to confront issues of importance as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively, exhibiting much more than knowledge and comprehension.
The mission of Brazosport ISD is to graduate each student to be future ready and UIL A+ Academics is one way to prepare our students for future success.
