On May 18, the Brazosport ISD Board of Trustees approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for Phase 3 from the 2019 Bond which allowed for the replacement of Brazoswood High School. Phase 3 is part of a four-phased master plan for the Brazoswood High School Campus. The school board’s most recent decision to approve the $83,277,102 contract is within budget from the voter approved 267 million dollar bond referendum which was passed by the community in May 2019. The bond also included funding for new CTE facilities and programs at both high schools, a new multi-sport athletic field house at Brazosport High School, the replacement of Stephen F. Austin STEM Elementary, safety and security, technology, transportation, and various additions and renovations to protect the district’s instructional and support facilities. Overall, the bond will provide opportunities for next generation learning environments at all new and existing facilities.
“We are very excited for this new state of the art campus for our current and future Buccaneers!” said Superintendent Danny Massey. “This new facility will offer our students more hands-on college and career readiness opportunities, as well as provide innovative spaces that were intentionally designed to meet the needs of every student.”
In Phase 3, the 278,000 square foot (sf) Brazoswood Senior High School replacement facility will serve approximately 2,800 students and replace the existing core academic classrooms, fine arts spaces, dining commons, administrative areas and auditorium. The three-story academic wing provides academic departments to be grouped together with innovative teacher collaboration spaces and student think spaces to promote flexible small group studies and collaboration. Larger group areas are designed into the building with a flexible large group instruction room and tiered seating adjacent to the dining commons where students can gather during lunch periods or can gather for presentations. The new fine arts spaces will provide state of the art rehearsal spaces, practice rooms, acustocial treatments and adequate storage areas. The new auditorium will accommodate over 900 seats and will have a separate entrance into the building to serve both students and the community. The building was designed to provide a secure entrance vestibule and minimize entry points into the building. The design process included students, staff, and members from the community. Utilizing VLK | CURATION®, community members collaborated to create the vision of the new high school and associated facilities. BISD’s leadership and Brazoswood staff met with VLK Architects during the design development stage of the project to offer input and ensure spaces were designed with teachers and students in mind. This project is scheduled to open fall 2022.
“It has been such an exciting journey to partner with Brazosport ISD in the design of the new Brazoswood High School,” said Monika Castillo, VLK Principal. “VLK was fortunate to work alongside students, staff and community members and hear their hopes and dreams of what they envisioned for the new high school. Their focus has always been on providing an environment where their students can achieve excellence and we are honored to help them achieve their visions.”
The master plan for Brazoswood Senior High School is being implemented through a four-phased initiative. Phase 1 and 2 include a new field house and a career and technology education facility. Currently in construction by Stewart Builders, the new field house will serve all Brazoswood students and will include over 7,000sf weight room that looks onto Slade Field. The field house project is scheduled for completion at the beginning of the 2020 school year. The new CTE facility, at over 90,000sf, will house classrooms, labs, and shops for Brazoswood’s programs in culinary, STEM, welding, manufacturing, vet-tech, floral design, health science and IT. The CTE project is scheduled to be completed the summer of 2021. Phase 4 includes athletic improvements and the conversion of the existing CTE facility into a district technology facility. This project is scheduled to begin April 2021 and will be completed fall 2022.
