Brazoswood and Lake Jackson Intermediate Students Attend 2020 State Youth Advisory Commission Summit
Brazosport ISD was well represented recently when several Brazoswood and Lake Jackson Intermediate students attended the 20th Annual Texas Youth Advisory Commission Summit in Kyle, Texas. BISD students joined approximately 275 students in grades seven through twelfth from across the state.
They attended sessions on how to be a better leaders and how to build a team. They participated in self defence classes and active shooter CRASE scenarios. They also collected donations for the Hays Caldwell Women’s Shelter. They heard motivational Speaker David Flood from New York who encouraged them on how to make a choice to be kind. He spoke about dignity, respect and compassion. “Be the person to reach out and show compassion first.”
It was the 20th Summit that Lake Jackson YAC has participated in. Terri Cardwell, Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Lake Jackson said, “Lake Jackson YAC actually started the 1st Summit in 2000 and invited Texas Municipal League to Lake Jackson to join the party. It has been an ongoing success since then.”
These local students applied and were selected to serve the community on the Lake Jackson Youth Advisory Board where they have opportunities to serve on projects like planting trees, assisting seniors, and cleaning up the city.
Terri Cardwell, volunteer coordinator for the City of Lake Jackson and Vivian Jones went as adult trip sponsors for this amazing group. Brazosport ISD is proud of these students for taking their time and energy to lead in service. Great job!
