The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

“We are honored to receive this designation three years in a row,” said Chris Hutchison, BISD’s Coordinator of Fine Arts. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our students and teachers to achieve excellence in our music programs.”

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, BISD answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
BISD has invested in music education throughout its history. Starting in the early 70’s, BISD was one of the first districts in the country to implement Kodaly and Orff techniques in elementary music classrooms. High standards are continued through the upper grades to provide a well rounded music education. BISD High Schools have excelled in marching, jazz, choral, and orchestra contests across the state. Countless band, choir, and orchestra students have earned All-State honors, as well as State Solo Outstanding Performer designations. Both Brazosport and Brazoswood consistently place in the State Honor Band finals with Brazoswood winning the honor in 2012. The Brazoswood band is also a 2016 Sudler Flag recipient.

According to the NAMM Foundation, this award recognizes that BISD is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.
