Rowena Lopez, counselor at Madge Griffith Elementary School and Darla Fagan, dual credit counselor at Brazosport High School have been named Brazosport ISD’s Counselors of the Year.
Brazosport ISD has a total of 36 outstanding counselors across the district. This year, we had the opportunity to give special recognition to an elementary counselor and a secondary counselor as Counselors of the Year. School counselors assist students at all levels. As vital members of the school leadership team, school counselors create a school culture of success for all. Mrs. Lopez and Ms. Fagan demonstrate attributes and qualities of supporting students in the areas of career, personal/social and academic development and have the highest levels of professional and personal ethical standards.

Rowena Lopez, counselor at Madge Griffith Elementary School, serves on the district lead counseling team and the crisis response team. This is currently her twentieth year as an educator in BISD. After 5 years of teaching fourth grade, her heart led her to counseling. Her favorite thing about being a school counselor is having the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of children, their families, and the teachers she works with. Mrs. Lopez enjoys building relationships, helping work through difficult moments, and celebrating successes.

Darla Fagan, dual credit counselor at Brazosport High School, also serves on the district’s crisis response team. She has spent the last 29 years being a school counselor and has a total of 41 years in public education. Prior to becoming a school counselor, she taught English and journalism. While she enjoyed being a teacher, her passion has always been counseling students. She feels her role as a counselor gives a new opportunity each day to change someone’s life in a positive way.
