BISD Principal/Teacher Published in Magazine: Teaching Math Across Language Barriers
Brannen Elementary School Principal Julie Evans and Math Teacher Lisa Trail were published in the October edition of Language Magazine! Their op-ed entitled “Teaching Math Across Language Barriers” explains some of the challenges educators face teaching math across language barriers and provides some practical solutions to overcome them.
“This is a great example of the dedication of our BISD staff to serve each and every student with a high quality education,” said BISD Superintendent Danny Massey.
The article explains that “a student may not be able to tell us what they’re thinking, but they can show how they’re trying to practice regrouping with counters.” De-emphasizing language and promoting universal math visuals on the walls of the classroom, as well as utilizing game-based programs such as ST Math support problem-solving skills students need across the curriculum.
