This is the image for the news article titled Both Brazosport and Brazoswood Place Powerlifters in Top 10 at StateBrazosport Senior Thalia Pina competed over spring break at the Girl’s State Powerlifting Meet. She set personal records on each of her lifts. Her bench press was 210 lbs, her squat was 420 lbs, and her deadlift was 340 lbs. She finished in 10th place for her weight class.

Thalia has been a part of the powerlifting program all 4 years of her high school career. Through her hard work and dedication she has had a very successful journey. Her freshman and sophomore years she made it to regionals and was a state alternate her sophomore year. This is her second consecutive year making it to the state meet. Last year she placed 5th and won the regional meet in her weight class. This year Thalia not only won regionals, but she also set the new regional record for squat at 415 lbs.

Thalia plans on using her powerlifting experience and her love for the sport to pursue a coaching career.

Brazoswood Senior Chrystal Lease lifted 270 pounds in her final of the day to place 10th in the 6A State Meet held Wednesday, March 16th in Corpus Christi.  Haley Hughes finished 12th and Taryn McDougal also competed. “I couldn’t be more proud of these girls because they came and competed,” Brazoswood coach Ryan Jones said. “Talk about bringing their best game with all three getting personal best records in some of those lifts. So they not only brought their best, but they went above what their best had been.”

Powerlifting competitions consist of completing three attempts in three events: squat, bench press, and deadlift. On any attempt, if competitors cannot successfully lift two out of three lifts they are out of the competition, or disqualified if they drop the bar by releasing it. To excel in the sport it requires strength, but more than that, it requires discipline, confidence, determination and a lot of technique and strategy.

Congratulations Thalia Pina, Coach TJ Heidt, Chrystal Lease, and Coach Ryan Jones on this outstanding accomplishment. We are proud of all our powerlifters who worked hard this season to excel in their sport.
