Brazosport ISD will join school districts across the nation May 11, 2022 to honor more than 73,000 school nurses who make a positive difference in the lives of our students each day. BISD has nineteen dedicated Registered Nurses and five Licensed Vocational Nurses covering our 19 campuses to ensure the overall health and well-being of students and staff.
Our school nurses provide a wide range of services. BISD nurses are skilled in assessing the ill and injured and proficient in providing emergency care. They care for children with special problems such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder, heart conditions, life-threatening allergies, organ transplants, vision and hearing impaired, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, cancer. They render First Aid for minor accidents, implement policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases, provide vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings, they maintain height, weight and immunizations records, administer medications. They also provide health programs to students such as dental care, hand washing, hygiene and maturation films. They provide nursing services such as catheterization, ostomy care, tube feedings and diabetic care.
BISD school nurses provide more than healthcare. They repair glasses, tie shoes, fix hair, sew buttons, improvise a belt, change clothes, provide clothes, provide snacks, provide a listening ear, etc. All this and more, done every day with kindness and compassion.
This year in particular our nurses have handled their extra duties related to the pandemic with poise and expertise. In addition to their regular job of caring for students’ medical and health needs, they have worked to keep track of isolation and quarantine timelines, stayed up to date on ever-changing guidelines, identified contact tracing, and had conversations with parents offering support and understanding in this challenging and confusing time.
During Nurses week and throughout the remainder of the school year, take time to recognize our school nurses for all they do to improve health and learning outcomes for our students.
Thank you to all of our school nurses for their tremendous work meeting the needs of students!
