Senior McKenzie Grahmann’s artwork entitled “Wake Up Call” has earned Mixed Media Class Champion out of all Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo submissions! Her art instructor, Emily Espeche said, “The only way [her award] could have been higher was if it was the Grand or Reserve Grand Champion, so it’s a huge honor.”

Thousands of students from 95 public school districts and 54 private schools entered the 2022 competition. In January, Judges sorted through 3,000 finalist artworks selected by school districts statewide and only 739 artworks were selected for Best of Show, Gold Medal, and Special Merit Awards. These artworks will be displayed at the Rodeo and advanced to the next round, known as the Grand Prix Judging, where Auction winners were selected.

From there, only 68 High School Artworks are awarded spots in the School Art Auction, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 13. Each finalist is guaranteed a minimum payment set by Rodeo Houston. (McKenzie's artwork was ranked as the #1 Mixed Media and the #4 Artwork overall in the entire contest)

You can see the winning artwork displayed in the Hayloft Gallery at NRG Center during the Livestock Show and Rodeo, which kicks off on Monday, Feb. 28.
