Beginning the first of November, all Brazosport Independent School District students in kindergarten through fourth grade will be reading the same book together as part of the One District, One Book literacy program initiative. The goal of this program is to build a community of readers while supporting our READ 20 Initiative --a BISD program which promotes literacy amongst all learners.
The book “The World According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney will soon be shared with the students and staff of these grade levels, along with a schedule outlining which chapters to read aloud on what days. Noted Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child's own reading level. The district selected this book because it can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children. The hope is that this becomes an enjoyable and special time for parents to share with their students, and that reading chapter books aloud continues even when they are able to read by themselves.
The Read 2020 literacy campaign began in 2016 and has continued to be a prominent program in BISD. Read 20 as it is now named has many aspects that involve not only teachers, but parents, district personnel, and community members at large. “We have a very supportive community that values education,” says Superintendent Danny Massey. “A key component of our literacy effort includes engaging our teaching community, families, community members, and businesses to get involved.”
