Brazosport ISD is excited to tap into the enthusiasm and energy of our community partners with a district-wide volunteer reading program that will go hand in hand with Read 20. The saying “Readers are Leaders” is a philosophy in BISD and we are looking to grow young leaders through volunteer “Hero Readers.” 

We are grateful for the many volunteers who help in numerous ways including regularly reading with our students and working to improve literacy competence. Read 20 Together is a unique opportunity targeted to early literacy development and learning recovery. Reading Heroes, as they have affectionately been named, will read one-on-one with a Kindergarten or 1st Grade student at least 20 minutes twice a month. The Reading Hero will get connected to the same student for the duration of the school year. 

Two highly respected reading experts Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas expressed the value of reading aloud to children this way, “The magic of language and books comes to life when we read aloud to children. Indeed, no instructional method we might choose can equal the power and joy of simply reading aloud a good book. When you read to children on a regular basis, you add immeasurably to the language resources of the classroom.” 

In BISD, we  believe volunteers play a key role in developing strong literacy and inspiring the love of reading for all children.
