In a heartwarming surprise visit, Superintendent Massey personally delivered the exciting news to this year’s honorees, celebrating their exceptional leadership and dedication to student success.
Melanie Pierson, principal of T.W. Ogg Elementary School, has been named BISD's Elementary Principal of the Year, while Cheryl Roberts, principal of Lake Jackson Intermediate School, has been named BISD's Secondary Principal of the Year.
Each year, BISD recognizes two principals who exemplify excellence in leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to their school communities. Both Pierson and Roberts have demonstrated an inspiring dedication to fostering a positive learning environment, empowering their staff, and making a profound impact on the lives of students and families.

Melanie Pierson - Elementary Principal of the Year
A proud BISD graduate, Melanie Pierson has dedicated over a decade to shaping young minds and driving academic excellence. Since stepping into the role of principal at T.W. Ogg Elementary in the 2022-23 school year, she has transformed the campus with her innovative strategies and student-centered approach. Known for fostering a culture of collaboration and lifelong learning, Pierson ensures every child receives the support they need to thrive. Prior to leading T.W. Ogg, she taught at Clute Intermediate School, served as an assistant principal there, and later took on the role of Dean of Instruction at Grady Rasco Middle School. Her passion for education and commitment to student success continue to leave a lasting impact on the BISD community.
Cheryl Roberts - Secondary Principal of the Year
A passionate advocate for student success, Cheryl Roberts has dedicated her career to shaping the future of education at Lake Jackson Intermediate School. Roberts has served as LJI principal since 2023 and has empowered both students and teachers to reach their full potential. Her commitment to excellence, forward-thinking approach, and ability to build strong relationships within the school community have made her a standout leader in BISD. With 20+ years in public education, Roberts began her journey in education at Bess Brannen Elementary as a teacher, followed by roles as a Campus Assessment Specialist, District Coordinator of Assessment and Accountability, and Assistant Principal at Brazoswood High School. In 2014, she advanced to Associate Principal at Brazoswood. Driven by an unwavering commitment to education and a strong focus on empowering students, Roberts continues to shape the future of BISD in meaningful and lasting ways.
