January is National Mentoring Month, and Brazosport Independent School District is proud to recognize the caring individuals and programs that make a lasting difference in the lives of our students. This annual recognition highlights the importance of strong mentoring relationships and the powerful role they play in helping young people succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Research consistently shows that students with mentors are more likely to perform well in school, avoid risky behaviors, and set meaningful goals for their future. Through guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling, mentors help students build confidence, develop life skills, and navigate challenges. These trusted relationships foster resilience, responsibility, and a vision for long-term success - empowering students to reach their full potential.
In support of this mission, BISD has expanded mentoring opportunities across the district, now serving nearly 550 students through a variety of student-to-student and adult-to-student programs. These initiatives reflect BISD’s commitment to meeting the unique needs of every learner and creating a safe, supportive educational environment.
Student-to-Student Mentoring
Peer Assistance & Leadership (PALS) Program
BISD’s long-standing PALS program at Brazosport and Brazoswood High Schools empowers student leaders to mentor younger peers by promoting positive decision-making, leadership, and resilience.
In addition, many high school athletic teams volunteer weekly at elementary campuses to provide reading support and tutoring. These visits allow younger students to learn from positive role models who demonstrate strong academic habits and character.
Adult-to-Student Mentoring
ASCEND Program
ASCEND (Acquiring Strength, Character, Employability, and Networking skills with Determination) supports students in transition by providing mentoring, college and career readiness activities, and social-emotional learning. Participants engage in goal setting, leadership development, college visits, and academic field trips to build confidence and prepare for future success.
BOATS Mentors
The Building of Athletes Through Service (BOATS) program, launched by the Brazoswood coaching staff, connects community men - many of them former BISD athletes - with student football players to provide mentorship, guidance, and encouragement.
LEO’s & PEARL’s
The BISD Police Department sponsors the LEO’s (Leaders that are Educated and are Overachievers) program for boys and the PEARL’s (Poise, Elegance, Attentiveness, Responsible Leaders) program for girls. These initiatives promote respect, accountability, and leadership. Programs are currently active at Stephen F. Austin Elementary, Lanier Elementary, Clute Intermediate, Freeport Intermediate, Lake Jackson Intermediate, and Rasco Middle School. Brazosport HS has the Man to Man Program which is a spin off from the LEOs and PEARLS.
LIFT UP Mentoring
LIFT UP is BISD’s one-on-one, school-based mentoring program that pairs students with caring adults for weekly 30-minute meetings during the school year. Matches are made based on availability, interests, and personality, with parent permission. The program’s goal is to help students “lift up” through consistent encouragement and support.
Reading Heroes
As part of the district’s Read 20 initiative, the Read 20 Together: Growing Leaders Through Hero Readers program connects community volunteers with kindergarten and first-grade students to build reading confidence and foster a love of literacy. “Reading Heroes” meet with the same student at least twice a month for one-on-one reading time.
Superintendent Danny Massey shares, “There is no greater way to impact a student’s life—and your own—than by becoming a mentor. Our goal is for every student in BISD to have a trusted adult they feel comfortable talking to.”
