Brazosport ISD is proud to celebrate two exceptional campus leaders who have been selected as the district’s 2026 Principals of the Year. Superintendent Massey shared the exciting announcement during surprise campus visits, recognizing each principal for their steadfast commitment to excellence and student achievement.
Jennifer Slater of O.M. Roberts Elementary School has been named the district’s Elementary Principal of the Year, and Herman Hebert of Lighthouse Learning Center has been named the district's Secondary Principal of the Year.
Each year, Brazosport ISD honors principals who exemplify outstanding leadership, inspire innovation, and demonstrate a deep dedication to their school communities. Slater and Hebert consistently lead with purpose and heart, cultivating supportive learning environments where students thrive and educators feel empowered.
Through their vision, integrity, and unwavering focus on student success, both leaders have made a meaningful difference on their campuses and across the district. Brazosport ISD congratulates Jennifer Slater and Herman Hebert on this well-earned recognition and thanks them for their continued service to students, staff, and families.
Jennifer Slater - Elementary Principal of the Year
Jennifer Slater, principal of O.M. Roberts Elementary, is known for her steady leadership and deep commitment to student success. Having served as assistant principal on the campus for nine years before being named principal in 2024, she stepped into the role with a strong foundation and a clear vision for continued excellence.
Reflecting on her time on the campus, Mrs. Slater shared, “Roberts has become my family. Our staff have shared in each other’s joys and sorrows and supported each other throughout the years. They are the most caring staff I’ve ever worked with. I love how they focus on ways to help all of our students -not just in academics, but ensuring they have access to essential resources and social/emotional support they need to thrive in every aspect of their lives. Our staff makes school a place where every child feels valued, safe, and cared for. I could not ask for a better place to be than Roberts and BISD!”
Mrs. Slater brings a diverse professional background to her role. Before moving into campus leadership, she served as a middle school science department head and science teacher, as well as working as a science research assistant, university academic advisor, and cell scientist/subtask manager supporting NASA-related projects through Wyle Life Sciences. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lamar University and a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University.
Passionate about making learning relevant, Mrs. Slater encourages real-world, student-centered experiences, ensuring students have the foundation in reading and math to communicate their knowledge and be life-long learners. She and her family are proud to call Lake Jackson home, where both of her children are products of a great BISD education -one a graduating Senior and one currently at Texas A&M.
Herman Hebert - Secondary Principal of the Year
Herman Hebert, principal of Lighthouse Learning Center, leads with humility, heart, and a deep belief in the power of teamwork. During his recent surprise recognition as Brazosport ISD’s Secondary Principal of the Year, announced by Superintendent Danny Massey, Hebert was quick to credit his staff for the honor. “I could not do this without you,” he shared. “Thank you for showing up every day —I appreciate you greatly.”
Hebert describes his campus in three words: Impact, Influence, and Accountability — principles that guide his daily work with students and staff. He encourages students to remember that their future is still being written. “You have the time and opportunity to right the ship. Write an encouraging story,” he advises.
He shared that one of the most meaningful lessons he has learned as a campus leader is the importance of listening. “My students have made me a better listener,” he explains. “They may struggle with communication, but if I step back and look past the emotion, there is always a story that needs to be heard.”
Herman Hebert joined Brazosport ISD more than a decade ago, first serving as an assistant principal at Brazoswood High School after spending ten years as a special education teacher. Before taking the helm of the Lighthouse, Hebert served for three years as a Special Services Coordinator of Behavior Support. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from Texas Southern University and a Master of Education in Leadership from Lamar University. Inspired by his parents’ example of hard work and determination, he chose a career in education to make a difference in the lives of others. Hebert says the most rewarding part of his work is building relationships with students and staff — and sharing a smile that reflects the positive culture he strives to create each day.
