Norrell, a 1969 graduate of Brazosport High School, was one of only eight men and women to receive this honor during a formal ceremony held at the campus on November 9, 2018.
Norrell played for the Sam Houston Bearkat baseball team from 1971 to 1973. He posted a 17-6 record in his career and still holds the fifth-best career ERA with a 1.78 mark. 1973 was Norrell’s best year, going 8-2 on the year and earning NAIA All-American honorable mention honors. That season, Norrell started the opening game of the District IV playoffs and shutout Southwestern University. He closed the year with a 1.34 ERA. In his career, Norrell fanned 158 batters in 211 innings of work while walking just 50 batters.

According to the SHSU website, nominees are judged according to their contributions to the business community, personal and professional accomplishments and civic contributions to society.
