This is the image for the news article titled Join BISD In Honoring the Men and Women in Blue May 10-16, 2020 is National Police WeekAgain this year, Brazosport ISD, along with schools and communities across the United States, wish to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind. In conjunction with Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is held annually in the United States on May 15 in honor of federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty, we honor ALL police officers from May 10 through May 16, 2020, as proclaimed, National Police Week.

This year, as part of the National Police Week, the names of 307 officers killed in the line of duty will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. Those 307 officers include 135 officers who were killed during 2019, plus 172 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history, until now.

The idea of a Peace Officers Memorial Day came into effect on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked the president to designate May 15 to honor law enforcement officers. President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. Each year, the president of the United States proclaims May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week of each year during which such May 15 occurs as Police Week.

Please join with us to honor the men and women in blue, who choose to run into danger to defend us each and every day. Thank you to BISD’s police officers and thank you to all who protect and serve!
