October is recognized worldwide as Dyslexia Awareness Month - a month is set aside to raise awareness, share resources, and to shine a light on dyslexia successes. Dyslexia is one of the most universal language-based learning disabilities. Between 5 to 10% of people around the world are estimated to have dyslexia while close to 80% of those with reading difficulties are also likely to have some form of dyslexia. Professionals identify children who are at risk for learning to read, spell, and write as early as possible. While the earlier we can intervene is best, it is never too late to get help! In Brazosport ISD students with dyslexia receive targeted support to best meet their individual needs. This is done through an intensive and systematic approach from as early as kindergarten all the way to high school that may include explicit intervention, classroom accommodations, and varying supports that help level the playing field for their education.
Let’s Shine a Light on BISD’s Dyslexia Services:
Trained dyslexia interventionist teachers (DAITs) provide intensive and targeted intervention instruction to students with dyslexia.
Students in middle and intermediate schools will receive varying support and interventions. Individual plans and needs are decided on by the campus committees which includes the parents.
In high school, students may receive classroom or technology support to help them be successful and learn to be their own advocate as they become an independent learner.
BISD is committed to early identification and intervention of dyslexia and any other related services. If a parent has any concerns that their child may have dyslexia, they should speak to their child’s teacher and/or campus administrator.
