As part of our School Volunteer Appreciation Week celebration, Brazosport ISD has exciting news! We are announcing the launch of a new district-wide volunteer reading initiative that we will link to our Read 20 program. Read 20 Together: Growing Leaders Through Hero Readers is coming Fall of 2021.
The mission of Read 20 Together is to inspire the love of reading and build confidence in BISD Kindergarten and 1st Graders by utilizing community partners to read with students. The Reading Hero will add another caring adult to encourage the student’s successful development.
Clara Sale-Davis, Chief Academic Officer said, “With the knowledge that reading and writing are the heart of learning in all other subject areas, the district is placing a laser focus on early-literacy development starting in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.”
Read 20 Together will utilize community volunteers to read one-on-one with a BISD Kindergarten or 1st grade student and the Reading Heroes commit to meeting with their same student at least 20 minutes twice a month for the duration of the school year. Other meaningful goals of this effort is the recovery of early literacy losses that may have occurred because of the 2020 pandemic and our students reading on grade level by the end of their 3rd grade year.
“We have a very supportive community that values education,” said Superintendent Danny Massey. “A key component of our literacy effort includes engaging our teaching community, families, community members and business to get involved. It’s going to take the whole village to create these readers as leaders!”
We are calling you to join us in having a positive, direct impact on our students becoming strong, confident readers. Your example and support will be a key influence in our student’s reading success.
