All BISD campuses with grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade will host Free Read Jamboree on their campus during the week of May 17 -20.  Free Read Jamboree began in May of 2018 as a way to provide students with books to facilitate summer reading.  Originally held on a Saturday in May, it was a one day carnival style event with the prizes for the games being books. After last year’s event cancellation due to COVID-19, it was decided to hold the 2021 Free Read Jamboree on each campus and create a week-long event celebrating reading, promoting literacy and encouraging summer reading. Authors will make virtual visits and the recording will be available all week for students to view.  The public library will introduce their summer reading programs.

Each day will be a different themed day with dress ups and giveaways. Some of the themes include:

  • Reading is Cool! Wear your sunglasses to school.
  • Reading is Groovy! Wear a tie-dye shirt to school.
  • Reading is Tiki-Rific! Wear a hawaiian shirt to school.

Sunglasses, leis, tie-dye face masks, beach balls, back packs will be given away during the week.  Students will be entered into a campus drawing for a Kindle Fire and each student will select a book to take home for summer reading.

Another fun part of the Free Read Jamboree this year is the activity of taking pictures of yourself “reading in a unique location.” Students and staff are encouraged to read a book in a fun spot, snap a picture and share it with the campus.

Check with your campus librarian for the daily themes and contests for the week. Join us in the celebration of literacy and reading and help us kick off summer reading for all K-6 students.
