Brazosport ISD was very excited to offer paid clinical teaching internships to selected candidates in the Spring 2021 semester. The district has worked diligently to secure partnerships with additional universities to allow candidates to complete their student teaching experience with Brazosport ISD.

Clinical/student teaching is the culminating experience where the pre-service teachers demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to educating pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade students. Generally, this 15-16 week-long, full-time requirement is completed as an unpaid internship, sometimes causing a hardship to young educators.

The selection process involves a district application and interview, which helps provide a real-life hiring experience for the clinical candidates. While there are only a select number of paid clinical positions available each semester, BISD still fully accepts and supports all traditional, unpaid clinical teaching candidates as well.

After candidates are selected they will be supported and developed in a cohort model. Brazosport ISD understands the importance of supporting the careers of pre-service educators. We welcome the opportunity to nurture these new careers in the hope of offering full time employment to eligible candidates. “Brazosport ISD is truly setting the standard for establishing the paid clinical internship program, and hope that districts throughout the state will follow our lead in recognizing the commitment and focus required to complete the rigorous clinical teaching requirements,” explains Kristi Kirschner, Chief Human Resources Officer.

In addition to being paid for their time and service, selected candidates also have the added employee advantages of benefits options, a district-issued device, access to school email, Google Suite, and eligibility for the Preferred Employer Program, a local partnership with East Bank at Richwood Village Apartments that allows for housing discounts.

In spring 2021, BISD welcomed nine paid clinical teachers from four partnering universities. We feel it has been a tremendously successful semester for this first cohort of paid clinical teachers. Through meaningful engagement efforts and continuous feedback from both clinical and cooperating teachers throughout the semester, we have been able to reflect and grow the program in a positive direction. BISD plans to expand and further develop this program by increasing the number of paid clinical teachers accepted annually.

“Providing a salary to our future educators in training takes a huge burden off of them for the necessary weeks of required internship, while they gain real-world experiences in the classroom that will add value to their profession,” explains Superintendent Danny Massey.

BISD is proud to have the opportunity to again offer a select number of paid clinical teaching positions for the Fall 2021 semester. We welcome candidates to come set the standard with us!
