The Brazosport High School Unified Track Team has earned a place in the state competition, which will be held in San Antonio on April 27, 2022. The team placed first at the Area 22 meet on April 8, 2022, which qualified them for the regional meet held April 19 at Prairie View A&M University where they earned third place and a spot at the upcoming state meet.
Brazosport High School earned the Unified Champions School designation from Special Olympics Texas in 2019-2020 for inclusive practices, which later expanded to a Unified Track team and events that included teams from area districts. Randi Hunter, Assistant Principal of Brazosport High School was instrumental in working with Special Olympics in establishing the Unified Track Meet at the campus. “The support from our school community and the City of Freeport has been amazing!” she shared. “This has been an incredible journey for everyone involved. It’s been amazing to see those relationships form between partners and athletes along with the joy from the coaches and sponsors who are involved.”
For the track meets, Special Olympics athletes form a team with General Education counterparts to participate in the Unified events. Each partnership competes in a variety of track and field events and have combined scores to count in the results. ”It’s so beautiful to see and I am optimistic that Unified will continue to spread in the years to come,” Hunter added.

These athletes, their coaches, and campus leadership’s commitment to the Unified program is evident by their fantastic performance at the area and regional meets. We are looking forward to their representation at the state competition next week!”
