Brazosport ISD is excited to offer three new courses for students next school year. These three courses are: Principles of Cosmetology Design & Color Theory, Business Management, and AP Precalculus.

Principles of Cosmetology Design & Color Theory is the first in a new program of study being launched next school year at Brazosport High School. The Cosmetology and Personal Care Services regional program of study introduces career and technical education (CTE) learners to knowledge and skills related to providing beauty and personal care services. CTE concentrators may learn about or practice managing personal care facilities and coordinating or supervising personal service workers.

In Principles of Cosmetology Design & Color Theory students coordinate integration of academic, career, and technical knowledge and skills in this laboratory instructional sequence course designed to provide job-specific training for employment in cosmetology careers. Students will attain academic skills and knowledge as well as technical knowledge and skills related to cosmetology design and color theory. Students will develop knowledge and skills regarding various cosmetology design elements such as form, lines, texture, structure and illusion or depth as they relate to the art of cosmetology. Instruction includes sterilization and sanitation procedures, hair care, nail care, and skin care and meets the TDLR requirements for licensure upon passing the state examination. Analysis of career opportunities, license requirements, knowledge and skills expectations, and development of workplace skills are included.

Cosmetology and Personal Care Services

Business Management will be added to the Business Management Program of Study. This Level 3 class is designed to familiarize students with the concepts related to business management as well as the functions of management, including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. Students will also demonstrate interpersonal and project-management skills. Students will begin the course by discussing effective communication and collaboration skills, teamwork, professionalism, and the importance of demonstrating a positive, productive work ethic. They will define and discuss motivation, rewards, real and perceived inequities in the workplace, and the Expectancy Theory. Also, the course will lead students to analyze the communication process and how to improve it as well as explain the qualities of leadership and the roles and traits of an effective leader in classroom activities, projects, workplace vignettes/scenarios, and/or other assignments.

AP CollegeBoardIn AP Precalculus is anticipated to be offered at both Brazoswood and Brazosport High Schools. In this course students will explore everyday situations and phenomena using mathematical tools and lenses. Through regular practice, students build deep mastery of modeling and functions, and they examine scenarios through multiple representations. They will learn how to observe, explore, and build mathematical meaning from dynamic systems, an important practice for thriving in an ever changing world. AP Precalculus prepares students for other college-level mathematics and science courses.

Students interested in any of these options are encouraged to discuss selecting these courses with their counselors during Spring 2023 course registration.
